Updates, Versions, Hacks, mods and CVS |
|
RedGerry writes "I've now several distinct PHP-Nuke sites running and have spent the best part of a week sorting out all the snags and fixes to get all the bits working.
My latest has been to add the BetaNC pack to an existing 6.5 site with a fair degree of success. I appreciate that as a beta there is little documentation but the support forums here at Nukecops have been a proverbial Oracle of solutions.
The question I now face is what to do with the plethora of sites I have with there various add-ons and mods. A good example would be the news-ordering mod that has a small sql mod to add a field 'display order' into the relevant table. Add the betaNC pack and the attempt to restore the news data will fail until you've carried out the similiar mod.
The 6.5 site has been running since April this year however one of my newer sites for a property development company uses 6.9 and was born about a month ago.
I've already resolved to attempt to bring my own four sites under a common version and modification of them individually is an essential task however CVS would seem to be the answer. My concern would be the individual nuances of individual sites that would undoubtedly throw up problems and result in sudden diasappearance of features, content or, at worst, the entire site.
One casualty of my transfer to the BetaNC setup was corruption of my site surveys data. The surveys and data became jumbled with the current survey offering options from the default installation. I had installed a mod to the original survey block but am damned if I can remeber what or even why! I'm sure I'll get it fixed with the backups prior to transfer. In the immortal words of Shrek 'it's on my to do list".
So what's the general feeling on the situ? Given my current decision making crossroads I'd be interested in opinions. Is it possible we will reach a common version under CVS?"

Re: Updates, Versions, Hacks, mods and CVS (Score: 1) by nuke-lux on Wednesday, August 27 @ 14:07:11 CEST (User Info | Send a Message) http://www.nukecommunity.com | i have exactly the same problem as you. I have more then 20 nuke sites on the net, an the all have their own list of tweaks and hacks. So every time a new version of nuke pops up, i have to update all my sites. FB doesn't really tell you what he changes, so you have to redo all the tweaks if you want to use the latest version.
I would also be really interested to know what are the advantages of cvs, how could we help developpers to know what really changed?
We should perhaps also start a list of tweaks we would like to see in the cvs nuke ... |
