vortex1606 writes "Dear fellow nukers,
A spammail distributer has taken my domain (Airscape) as originator for his spammail. It looks like he's sending thousands of messages that appear to be comming from my domain (anything@airscape.org). If you receive such spam, please note that noone at my site is sending them.
I am currently waiting for a reply from my provider, he has approached the provider of the originator of that spam and will file an official complaint. Since the originator of this spam seems to be in the far east, I doubt it will have much effect.
My advice to you is as follows, if you start receiving a lot of bounced messages of e-mails you've never sent, be sure to ring a bell somewhere, starting with your provider. Allevon here at nukecops can also give you many hints.
The spammail can also contain (in some cases of the bounced mail I received) the banner of your site. Remember that this is theft. They are stealing your bandwidth.
This message has two reasons:
1. Please donot condamn airscape for outrageous spam you may receive.
2. beware that this can easily happen to you.
Thanks for your time."

I think its important for people to understand spam is not a victomless crime.

I find it funny since it is just a traffic domain I have to bring people to one of my sites and I don't use it for email of any nature. |

Re: Spammail (Score: 1) by FireHawk on Thursday, December 11 @ 07:08:36 CET (User Info | Send a Message) | I would go through your site and verify that you don't have an old version of formail.php, i believe that the versions 2.1 and older are open to spammers. I had an incident on one of my servers where one of the sites had the script installed, and a ton of spam was being sent from my server, to the point it was starting to overload the server. if you have root access to the server, ssh in to it, and
#locate 'formmail.php'
that should find any occurances, see if that fixes it. |

Since only the originator is changed and the messages aren't being sent through my server. I have installed the Protector module, just in case. One never knows.
Allevon, thanks for everything, and I'll keep you posted. |
