Copyright issue on WebMail module |
|
nuke-lux writes "Today FB announced @ phpnuke.org that he has removed the webmail module from nuke. He explained that it was because of copyright infrigement (http://sourceforge.net/projects/rc4crypt/) .... but i found the class used in the webmail module and it's GPL, so i don't understand what FB mens. Here is the whole message ...
Hello Nukers! Few days ago I was contacted by the author of the RC4Crypt class used by the WebMail module included in PHP-Nuke as a module. This module has been taken from Ecomjunk.com and I personaly modified many of its parts. The author of the crypt class in question, has demostrated that this script is released under proprietary license and it isn't GPL. For this reason I decided today to fix it and remove the WebMail module from the PHP-Nuke distribution to avoid any copyright infringement, which isn't the spirit behind all this work. If you're distributing PHP-Nuke and/or WebMail module please proceed to remove the offending file (class.rc4crypt.php) from the source or just delete the WebMail module. There will be a GPL solution in the near future. Thanks for your attention on this issue.

Do you want to be a part of the open source movement or what? Let's use some common sense.
It's not as bad as the double standard memlabs.net has with their copyright policy (don't change our copyright notice but we'll sure change FB's notice) but it's bad enough. Almost makes me want to find a CMS that doesn't require any copyright postings at all so that true branding can occur. |

I gather most people are hanging around on the forums or news posts, and then emailing me and asking me why I have included the GPL.txt in the RC4Crypt class.
