nukeevangelist writes "To make China more acceptable to PHPnuke
Posted by Mgccl on nukescripts.net on Saturday, May 20 2006 @ 02:40:21 EDT :: It's hard to make China accept PHPnuke
I know there are phpnuke sites in China, but there are not so many people use them because
-there are other CMS (which is so much worser than PHPnuke) that have more support in Chinese;
-The phpnuke now does not support Chinese well, it got some bugs that make it goes wrong. Even there are patches to solve it... but no one botheres;
-PHPnuke does not match many Chinese website style. Chinese websites that are large enough to use PHPnuke will structure like http://www.php168.com/ rarely people will even like PHPnuke's structure of the page;
-PHPnuke does not match the 2 of the most popular forum systems in China (Discuz! and PHPwind, which is in many ways better than PHPbb), so you must take bb2nuke out and make Discuz.... and PHPnuke sessions....
-there are some Chinese phpnuke site I like to go to, http://www.aman.38.com/phpnuke/ this site solved the problem of wrong showing in Chinese...
www.phpnuke.org.cn
This site is the only Chinese site that suggest people to use PHPnuke and looks like not much people go. because there are really no that much for any Chinese webmaster think PHPnuke is better than other CMS system in China (which is BUGGY TO DEATH...). I think the only way to make Chinese people to accept PHPnuke is to make an Chinese website that can really show the true power of PHPnuke. for me, PHPnuke is a system that can combine everything, like port Wordpress and all other scripts (not really Porting, but just make wordpress can use things from PHPnuke)

Re: To make China more acceptable to PHPnuke (Score: 1) by rwxrwxrwx on Sunday, May 21 @ 12:01:07 CEST (User Info | Send a Message) http://www.ratboyz.com/ | China has the fatest growing internet population. So, it's a good idea to tailor software to meet their needs. Most western developers though can't tell the difference between Chinese, Japanese, or Korean languages let alone know if the characters are being displayed correctly. They need assistance from natives to point out specific problem areas rather than saying something generic like the software doesn't support their language well or has some bugs causing problems. For example, when the charset encoding is changed to one that supports Chinese, is the entire page not rendering correctly or just certain blocks/modules.
Before marketing Nuke to the Chinese, IMO the first step is to fix the script if it's not working properly for them. Might be tough getting FB to do this, but perhaps Raven or one of the other Nuke clone creators might be open.

i fully agree: "China has the fatest growing internet population. So, it's a good idea to tailor software to meet their needs"

Those in the Nuke community can do whatever with pure html and php code, however nearly all of us are Chinese language stupid.
As NE stated, let them step up, ask questions, and the community can help from there.
Now if everyone's income was derived from selling Nuke to China, then that is a different story. However, the community is not trying to sell anything for profit. |

Many users are code ignornant. If a script doesn't work in their language, they usually give up and move on to another one.
English letters use a single byte while Asian characters are multibyte. To fix this requires playing around with the display/database encoding. By having a native close at hand, he can easily say which parts look fine and which are still screwed up as it's being tweaked. IMO this is something the main developers have to take on so that it becomes part of the core and doesn't require someone else maintaining a separate mod that will need updating every time a new version is released.
