I dunno about how innocent that era was. The C64 was probably the birth place of polymorphic code, which is the mainstay of today's virii, as this processor worked so well and was easy to code for. I still remember some of the virus created in this era. I also remember when one infected file uploaded to a BBS could wipe out the entire board.
Of course by 1989 I was talking Internet, as the "dictator"-nets of the time were not looking all that attractive, and really, packet networks sucked.
Ya, we have come places since then. Now in seconds we can wipe out whole portions of the Intenet, instead of just a BBS or two. I'm sure the highspeed gigabit backbones of today have contributing nothing to this either (good or bad).
Isn't technology great =)
