like most of you, I have had my fair share of spam botters on my phpbb forum and like most of you I do the normal thing, Ban their email and IP etc etc. But what I would really like to do is cut these idiots off at the door.

I was wondering if there is a Account Activation by Administration Only type hack?. Meaning that only an Admin can activate a New account for your site? I Know that I have become pretty good at spotting a Spammer on the forum when they sign up, repeated info in the occupation and Interest feilds, strange email adresses etc. So I am pretty confident I could "filter out" the majority of spammers before they even got registered.

I know this would be a pain for large sites with 600 new applicants a day, but for us smaller to mid sized sites......I would sure use it.

For phpNuke, there is the Approve Membership mod.
phpBB provides the admin account activation in the Forums Config

I am hoping to do the same thing, I am making a private gaming squad site with phpnuke. I checked and I have the Account Activation selected under admin, in the forums config, but when people go to register, they still get an email stating to "click link to activate account".

I'm wanting to approve those who register at the site altogether. How can I do that? I can't seem to find it anywhere within the module settings.

Thanks in advance.

I have a simple question about the Approve Mod- are there any complications that have arisen from using that mod with Nuke8.0?

Nicholas

UPDATE #1 - Ok I found the answer to my question in a page that talks about the version of this mod available for Nuke8.0:

http://www.ulsoft.scarbridge.co.uk/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=1

But the requirements are as follows:

Approve_Membership 6.1.6 for PHP-Nuke 8.0. This version requires that you patch your site to 3.3 standard before installation. Links at bottom left of this site.

I only see 3.2 patches on that page - anyone have any clues about 3.3 patches?

UPDATE #2:

I found the 3.0 patch, but the zip file contains an admin .php file, and a config.php file....

I am concerned that replacing my current files with these will somehow damage my current files.... any comments on applying these patches?

Here is teh verbiage that accompanies the files, and there are no "install" instructions that I am used to using to protect me from myself..lol.:

The latest patch for PHP-Nuke 8.0
Just about all variables have been secured against sql injection by running a check on their content before inserting anything into the database tables and after having extracted anything from them as well, any module that had not been secured before has been included as well as all admin files.

Note: Nuke Patched is not intended for upgrading a previous version of PHP-Nuke, it only includes the files that have been patched, you need to get the normal version at phpnuke.org first before you can use the patch, in essence this particular patch is meant for PHP-Nuke 8.0, you need to have PHP-Nuke 8.0 installed first before you add this patch. Nuke Patched is not intended for forks of PHP-Nuke either as these might have forum mods and modified core modules, adding Nuke Patched to these will make you lose any non-default changes in files.

10/25/06: Vulnerability Report fixed.

3/1/07 Update: Removed Forum Related Files For Ease Of Installation Without Losing Forum Upgrades Or Modifications.
