Before I go off starting to code up a personalization system for my members I thought I'd better see if something already exists, but so far all my searches have turned up nothing, and here I am as a last resort to ask if anyone knows of anything that will do what I need.

I've got some members who would like to customise the content of the home page. The home page has a number of blocks, and I'd envisage having each of this default to my choice of content, but allow each to have the content selectable from the blocks that are enabled on the site, or be empty. For instance, User A could have the random gallery image block at the upper left side and the newest 10 forum posts in the middle, and User B could have the random gallery image in the middle and newest 10 posts in the upper left side.

I've got a reasonable idea of how to go about getting this to work, although my PHP/MySQL experience is limited to modding the existing site code (but I do have over 12 years database and programming experience so I'm not a complete beginner), but I'd rather not reinvent the wheel if someone has already done this.

Any suggestions on what add-ons might enable something like this? Or am I about to start slapping code together myself?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I haven't seen user-specified blocks configurations. But that is certainly possible. You may have to code it yourself.
