Hi there,

I am 4 days into Nuke, and my site is cute. I love it. One question i have is that i am trying to create a module that is in the center and that i can populate with a dynamic category listing like Yahoo!... where it has two columns of main categories, and then little subcategory links under it....

I have saw this on two sites, but i can't find a module that does it... i don't want users to upload stuff, or be able to change the categories, i suppose i could just create the SQL tables myself and read them into a module ...

The trick is that i don't want the links to lead to external web pages... as the user drills down into my category listing, i want them to end up at a block or module type content page that maybe shows a picture, and text and a way to put something in a shopping cart....

Can anyone give me a hint on which block/module combo to use?

thanks a bunch!!!! Rolling Eyes

Use the model of Downloads or Web_Links, where there is a technical possibility of creating subcategories. If you make the new categorial structure identical with Topics, and implement the corresponding changes in the News module, this would spell a new revolution in php-Nuke. In other words, try to add subcategories to Topics (to avoid the present artificial slash rubrication).

It's a pity nobody has addressed this paramount question so far.

I think there is no need of creating new table for the categories. We can simply use the categorial structure of the Downloads or the Web_Links.

Of course, the generic solution is to have ONE only nuke_categories table for Downloads, Web_Links, Topics, etc., which can be used for any new modules based on categorial division.

PS. What is now termed "news categories" may remain flat; "news categories" are formal divisions, while it is "news topics" that are the real content specifiers. Why? Simply because "news categories" are listed in the right info blocks and, therefore, should be short and limited in number, while news topis could be thousands, depending on the content targets of the vortal (a vertical portal that php-Nuke can easily turn into).

Yes, i think you are on the right path. I think i will port a model of download into this type of thing i want to do... should be exciting.
This is a wonderful piece of softare.

I formerly worked for a big corporation who paid over $50,000
for a professional portal package, and this kicks it's Rainbow Brite and
it's open source.

I have to tell you, i sit in a dark corner of my room at night and
laugh this maniacal, demonic laugh at how the real techies and
innovators in this world will always outshine the lapdogs and yes
men of big business

Hat's off to the all the individuals who orginally coded this infrastructure
and all of it's contributors...

Hi there - I posted about something similar:
http://www.nukecops.com/postp8932.html&highlight=#8932

Did you ever make it work, adapting downloads?

I'm not very clued up, so if you could spell out how you did it, I'd be most grateful.

Thanks,

Martin C
