I can run cron jobs, but I don't have shell access. How do I log in to the cvs if I don't have shell acess?

That could be a problem without shell. We might have to do a php script for this.

that will be a really helpfull work i guess

then we will be able to just run a php script each day.
running just a php script everyday manually wont be much of a problem for anyone i hope.

@least for who have problems with shell access or understanding the complexities

we will be looking forward for the script

A php script would be wonderful.. I know a lot of hosting accounts don't have shell access, but they can run cron jobs.

Can we set it up so a cron job can execute the php script?

The PHP engine is setup for Apache, so you need to run either shell or perl code for the cron.

Perl should be a lot more common than shell access. (I know I have Perl support on my hosting plan)

You know, this conversation leads to another interesting point that i haven't seen brought up yet...

Should there be a list of minimum requirements to run nBC6.5?

and a cooresponding list of full requirements for running all the features of bNC6.5 (namely, the auto-updating)

Running the automated update at this point serves as a bonus. I for one don't like to reside on servers where I cannot get shell root access. If you can setup the shell script in the bundle in a cron, go for it. Otherwise, I have to create a PHP script that can execute it.

Biggest question is, does your host have CVS, and do they allow you to access it? If not, then this auto-update won't work.

nope, no CVS on this server... I think a php script is going to have to be written for people on more limited hosting plans.

Without CVS there is nothing that I can do. That is a base requirement for automated updates. Otherwise, you'll have to grab a snapshot and simply upload the files. (Always make backups)

so, what hosting company's are out there that offer all these tools in one package?

please correct me if I am wrong, but from what I have gathered... if you want to be able autoupdate, your hosting plan must have these technologies supported:
  • MySQL and PHP(obviously)
  • SSH access
  • cron jobs
  • perl
  • and a cvs running of some kind?
