I have several different galleries in my avatar directory. They are named different things, and there is no "gallery" folder now. I changed the paths according to another post about a similar problem, so now I have removed all references to /gallery in my index.php of your_account, and this lets people pick an avatar from the forum profile and save it fine, it seems..
The problem is, they can't go to your_account and choose to select from a list, and they only get a blank avatar (blank.gif) and are unable to select it there.

Does this happen to anyone else using multiple galleries or does everyone else use one giant gallery? This is driving my users crazy.
