When you backup from the admin page, what is the size of your database?
My db has been growing steadily and is about 18.5 mb right now. |

I'm not sure what mine is, but I do know it crashes PhpMyAdmin when I try to reupload it. Anyone know of a way around this besides downloading file by file? |

We host and work with many clients, and can say that DB size 100-500Mb it's more or less regular situation.

The best way is to use mysqldump utility.
Another option to use cpanel for download dump and restore it if needed.
Anyway, if phpmyadmin crashes during uploading/downloading it's well known bug. phpmyadmin can't handle big DB. In such case it's a problem of hoster, he have to solve it. |

Is there a better way to backup than with the admin panel? |

Personally I don't like the admin panel backup. I use Mysql Administrator to run daily backups on all my sites. Nice thing about it is that you can schedule your backups with in minutes and restore them all or partially in less than a minute. |

As long as you can give the ip, username and password of your database I don't see why not. I used to rent from recongamers.com and they had shared hosting. If your database server is labeled as localhost then it probably won't work. But if your host is kind enough to give you the ip of the mysql server then it shouldn't be a problem, especially since your running it from your own machine. |

Can you explain how it is done? Or is there a tutorial somewhere?
Thanks again,

The download and info on this is available here
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/administrator/index.html There are some good screen shots there and some info on how it works. The application has a XP look to it so its pretty user friendly. I think there is some information on how to use it once downloaded and installed. Try it out and if you run into any brick walls let me know and I will see if I can help. I run this both at work and at home for dozens of websites. |
