Someone brought up the question of PHP-Nuke's server load at phpnuke.org and this was my reply... thoughts?

I'll move this over to Community, but to answer your question is slightly difficult without seeing server statistics. You see, take some examples:

phpnuke.org

- obviously uses PHP to deliver the pages
- MySQL is the backend
- Linux distro
- http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph/?host=www.phpnuke.org
- mod_gzip is not installed

broadbandreports.com

- mod_perl serves up pages
- MySQL backend
- Linux distro
- http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph/?host=www.broadbandreports.com
- mod_gzip is installed

Both have over 40,000 active users and both serve up pretty quickly. Only difference I can see between the two is that broadbandreports.com is distributed over several servers, and broadbandreports uses mod_gzip.

Mod_gzip speeds up the delivery of text messages, but does take up more CPU resources. I don't know how many servers phpnuke.org runs on, but I suspect it may be one? And even though it doesn't use mod_gzip, the CPU time isn't taken up as much anymore.

You can't just say one language is better than another. You need to account for how many servers are used, their speeds, what kind of pipe connections, and what modules are used in Apache (that is if Apache is even used).

I hope this helps...
