Got a question, if I am running my own server on my own dedicated computer running cable, how does it compare to the speeds of hosting companys. So in general terms how many people can it handle until it gets kind of slow. I know that the hosting companys use like t3 lines and stuff. Also my cable is running around 2-3 MBs speed. Thanks! O also here are my computer specs: 2.5 Celeron, 256MB DDR, 40GB IDE 5400RPM. Windows XP And all im doing is running one website (for now at least)

Well that computer will not handle a high load because its a celeron... but who knows... I ran a website off my computer which was a P3 600 MHZ with 256MB Ram and XP on a cable modem and it did fine.
When you get into larger server loads as NC gets into you have to have faster lines and a faster machine. The other thing is is that just because your download spees are rated a 2-3 MBs doesnt mean that your upload speeds are fast. I had a comcast Cable modem 1.5 MB line and I think uploads maxed at 20-30kb/s
So all in all, try it for now and if your site gets busy go and get a host... just do alot of research in them before you sign up with a host. Check out webhostingtalk.com as they have alot of reviews about different hosts.

ahh nobleclem we meet again. Um well the thing is that the computer I'm using is dedicated only to the site. I've seen a lot of dedicated server options that is running almost exactly what I'm running but with faster lines. I ran a few tests and my upload speeds are around 400KBs. And downloads are about 2.5-3.0 How fast are hosting companys upload speeds? O also I do have a host its just that I'm making more sites and and I don't want to upgrade my hosting package yet and add another domain on it. But does anyone know what upload speeds hosting companys are running and how much they cost a month to get. Not really going to get it but Just a thought.

Well it really depends on their connection and caps that they might have in place.
I am kinda surprised on your upload speed. Maybe I got screwed and had crappy upload speeds... oh well.
