I beleive you can...

I dont think the coding is tied into PHP-Nuke in anyway.

You just want the code in the comments to run before anything else so that it catches these attempts...

Yes, that is the way ZX designed it. It isn't tied to nuke, it will work with any php/MySQL site. Just made sure the code that he has you normally run in the mainfile is in the very first piece of php code that is parsed by the server.
