I have a task at hand in that I really want to upgrade my nuke to the latest version.

Here are the parameters:

present install: heavily template-modded install that started out around 6.0 and has misc security patches that I have been able to find but has never been fully upgraded. The last time I ran it the analyser script reported 7.0 I think.

I have archived, search engine idexed, story content dating back several years that I am very loathe to lose.

On the positive side there are no forum issues to consider as I do not use them:-)

My host has cpanel with Fantastico; (however my original install is non-fantastico); if I could simply back up my current install delete the current install (Fantastico will not over an existing install), reinstall Nuke to the latest version and reinsert my template and story content files that would be a dream come true.

So I guess my question is:

is this something that is feasable to do?

If there is not a way to do this could anybody reccomend a safe starting point to start the upgrade process if a one step upgrade from 6-point- "something" is not doable?

I would be willing to experiment on a test install but I dont want to waste a lot of time if it is likely to be for naught.

It would be really nice (read: convenient) to somehow get on the fantastico upgrade path, my site has been defaced twice (probably from sql injections) and while my site/db gets backed up weekly restoring it is a tedious chore.

ideas and/or suggestions much appreciated.

thx
RH

I don't recommend Fantastico - its upgrade solution is usually buggy. You will save yourself headaches by doing it yourself.

Not knowing how modified your site is, it could be as simple as loading the files of the version you want to use and running the upgrade scripts. Then you can reapply any mods or addons that you want.

The more manual way, and more time-consuming, is comparing the files one by one using a file difference program. I recommend WinMerge, its free.
This maybe harder, since some files have been moved or deleted

Hi Evaders99-

well I took your advice to hand, bit the bullet and 3 hours later my nuke is still alive- there are a few cosmetic odds and ends to fix (I went ahead replaced the theme- I was running a modded copy of Sand Journey (my old one still ran...mostly;-) I modded it up like 3 years ago when I >really knew nothing about CMS's (like I am any authority now;-)

Anyway after I loaded in 7.9 and replaced my config all the upgrade steps (I had to start the upgrade at 6.0:-0) went without a hitch; since I didnt break my sql or lose any story content the rest is gravy as far as I am concerned. I'll have to get on the nuke mailing list and keep up with the upgrades as they come out now that I am pretty much "running clean". I have never had any problems with my ISP's Fantastico installations, and I have installed and upgraded quite a few times successfully on other sites, but this was a good learning experience and now that I know I can do an upgrade my self it doesnt seem like such a daunting task, and if like you say, there are bugs in fantistico I may come out better in the long run.

Thanks again for your help and advice, if you work on Nuke all the time I know it must get tedious seeing the same noob problems like I had on the forums all the time; please know your efforts are appreciated.

thx
RH
