I'd like to be able to see the original private message on the screen for replying. Is there a mod out there that does this or is this something I'll have to code?

There is a quote for PM mod available, I think you can pick it up over at portmods.com
Haven't used it yet so din't know if it what you are looking for but give it a blast anyway
