Still challenges with GT and mod_rewrite

Hi, all. Want you to know that when I stumbled across this thread from Zhen-Xjell's recent posts, I thought I had found Nirvana, Valhalla, and Heaven in one spot. I have been researching and studying for about 2.5 months now trying to teach myself how to do this, knowing that it would be a challenge.

I have read this entire thread at http://nukecops.com/postt362.html (all 250+ posts), attempted the install, and have then reread again completely. To no avail, I am pretty sure that my challenge is with the mod_rewrite since I am seeing the correct page URL's in the index.php (et al) on my current test implementation of the 6.5 Final Release found here . Unfortunately, the forums.html, links.html, etc don't seem to be getting dealt with in the mod_rewrite so as to be presented to the server correctly, allowing for the proper file to be returned to the browser (otherwise known as the 404).

You can see the PHP Info here. My concern is that under the "loaded modules" is says that mod_rewrite is there. Argh!
And I have zipped up my rewrite files and uploaded them here

My only guess at this point is that, if mod_rewrite is truly there and functioning (is there some easy way to test this with the php-nuke db?), that I might be having trouble with the .htaccess file. I created it in notpad saved as .htaccess (no txt extension), uploaded. Additionally, my new host allows me to create/edit files via their web based control panel, so I tried creating .htaccess in the proper $nbd where config.php and index.php are located.

One other "symptom", I clicked on the "private messages" link and received the following error information. I am sure it means "something", though what, I trust one of you will know!

At a glance the files seemed ok but i redid your sessions.php file to see if it would help

Hey, Chatserv. Thanks for your time and effort. I uploaded that sessions.php file but no changes. Still seeing the links (forums.html, links.html) being written to the web page, but clicking them and I am getting the 404.

Is there anything I can do at this point on my end to help with the trouble shooting? Just let me know. Thanks.

I had a similar problem once, so let`s try what i did, chmod htaccess to 644

I remembered reading that you had done that in your thread, so I had given it a shot. To be thorough I went into the control panel at my host, and "reassigned" .htaccess 644. No luck, though. One thing I did see, and I am wondering about now is that my control panel has a little information about a file, and in regards to .htaccess, it says that it is "File type: ASCII English text".

Is that how it should be?

So, I thought I would create the .htaccess file again and upload via "binary" mode. Checked the chmod and it is 644. But now the File type is: ASCII English text, with CRLF line terminators.

And now I am getting a "Forbidden You don't have permissions to access" and the index.php page is not showing up. Argh! What did I do!?

Damn! I re-upped the file, and it still is giving me the Forbidden access. Going to try creating it again right on the server, and putting it where it goes. Argh!

Okay, got it up there and am now back to where I was, accessing the php-nuke site, but not getting the mod_rewrite to do its stuff.

Anything else I can/should do?

Oh, and I meant to say that the changes to the sessions.php file fixed that error code I was getting on the Private Messages page. Thanks.

Just wondering if there isn't some quick and dirty test I might be able to run on the php-nuke site/db that would effectively let us know whether or not mod_rewrite is actually functioning correctly. Thoughts? or is that not an effective trouble shooting method? Just reaching here.

On this note, I was reading through the documents that Imago had included in his Rewrite 1.95 zip, and he mentioned changing the chmod to "either" 644 or 666. I tried, but no go.
