ok, i actually did the same thing as the original poster did today. im going to try again tho, in a few minutes.
as far as the themes go, what i have found is that when you apply a theme to your SITE, it does NOT apply to your phpbb forum at all, with the exception of the fonts. it changed my main fonts to white, to match my site, but my phpbb forum has a white bg and i couldn't read Rainbow Brite. with the errors mentioned in this thread, i couldn't do Rainbow Brite about it.
but like i said, im going to try this fix again, if it doesn't work, i just spent the last 15 minutes setting up my vbulletin again to replace the phpbb.
