There was a call from FB sometime back for a hack for the news module. This is what he has written
Quote:
Hello Nukers... I'm very happy to see modules everywhere for whatever thing you want to do with PHP-Nuke, BUT I never saw a nice code hack for News module. I made a very simple example for PHP-Nuke 6.0 that you can download from here. The idea is to have simple example and a little inspiration for PHP coders. News module is the default one in PHP-Nuke installation, is also the most used used module as a home page, so why don't try to have new stuff? With the new features included in PHP-Nuke will be possible to have practicaly one different site for each theme, so I think it's time to give some attention to the News module. What do you say?
There are also many other modules that has been almost never touched by anyone. For example Your_Account module, Private_Messages, etc.
Lets do something about this... (http://www.phpnuke.org/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=4617).
But sadely I have not seen anybody putting much time into creating a professional news module. I wonder if FB has done that in PHPNuke 6.5. I would really like to see great guys in NukeCop responding to this.

people create modules and tweaks when they see a reason to.
Nobody HAS seen a reason to touch the news module yet.
If you want to do a tweak, you're quite welcome, but we've got better things to do @ the moment (big long list of things actually)

Undoubtedly you are busy, and unfortunately I am not a programmer. But why we need a hack for the news module is clear enough from FB's post which I have coated. At present all Nuke site looks almost the same. Different layout of the news module can give each site a distinction, and that is why I thought experienced coder like yourself may be interested to come up with some solution. But obviously you have many pressing (better) businesses to attend to the extent to be annoyed with a genuine suggestion and not to see any reason for the suggestion. Fair enough.

don't get me wrong if I came over a bit arrogant, but without a guideline as to what people want in a news module, we can't do anything about it.
People are sometimes (not often) saying "Needs to look more professional" but nobody ever says "What I'd like it to do is this......."
If it's just layout you want to change, then all that has to be done is edit the theme, as the layout for the news module is controlled there.

Thanks. I understand the pressure you people are in with all sort of requests and in all fairness your service to the community is commendable. If i can clarify what would be very useful to the nuke community in terms of a new News Module are as follows:
Of course, the first point is what FB was trying to convey that the PHPNuke is a potent tool which allows every nuke site to be innovative, and one of the ways is to have distinctive news module with features such as (just examples):
1. First two items in two columns
2. Then the following items one after another
3. May be an special block inbuilt in the module for a photo with a brief note (an inbuilt block which will get photos from a particular folder/ database dynamically rather than having to activate an html block)
4. Ability to put news in blocks which will get news from a particular category or a topic
5. Options for easily defining styles, diffrent colours for the headings and text
6. And also ability to choose what other information (e.g., bytesmore, poster's name, time formate etc.) you want to be displayed
7. All the features may not necessary for a particular site - the file should be easily editable even by a ordinary nuker so that he can activate the fetures he wants to give the site a distinctive look
I am not a programmer but as a user this is kind of my wish list for a 'professional' looking news module. Some of the features I have mentioned may already be easily achievable with a little editing of the theme file (but I am not so sure how much flexibility is there). What I am talking may be nonsence from a programmer's point of view. But FB has already done one News Pro module as an example but this module works only with the supplied theme.
Hope I have able to inspire some of the experts to embark on this in their spare time for the benefit of the community.

I think the call is a fair one but speaking for just myself, I've tied up with current projects. Why? The news module already exists and is proven to work. It delivers the news. I am working on tools that don't exist:
google tap
analyzer
wire tap
And the whole Nuke Cops team is involved in the phpbb 2.1 port for php-nuke integration. It is tough going because of the new sql injection filtering code.
I can't speak for the others, but IMHO these outweigh the call for a new news module at this time. Perhaps at a later date when all of these items are said and done we can move forward on the call.

the block u asked for is a Gallery mod block, not anythign to do with the news. (the one for the pictures that is).
Here's the projects I'm currently working on:
Handbook Module
The Complete Idiots Guide to PHP-Nuke (more content)
Planning towards the Invision Powerboard port (i think Invision will distribute it for me).
bug-fixing the phpBB port version 2.1 (same as Zhen-Xjell and Chatserv are working on)
I'm also trying to run 4 web sites (The Sci-Factor, NukeCops to an extent - plus 2 others which aren't publicised yet - closed membership basis still while they're being set up)
