sign up module that assigns a number to user refistering

i am runniing a sports contest that has tryouts where people physically show up.

I am looking for a module that will allow users to pre-register for the contest so that they may be assigned a number in the line of people who show up - anyone that doesn't pre-register via the website will go to the end of the preregisterd line.

Module needs to take users information and assign him a number - subsequent users who registered are signed the next number in order and so on?

Anyone lknow of a moduel like this -even close that we could modify?

The default registered user table auto-increments the user_id... why not just use that number?
