Greetings,
I have the following question concerning the downloads module. I understand that you can make so only registered users can download files from your site but my question is this. Is it possible to create different logins that grant different access rights for downloads and viewing rights? I know that you can do that with forums but not sure with the site itself.
If you can not do it that way can I password protect individual downloads so that on people with that password can download them.
I have seen on many sites that they have a "pay" download area, could I make one of those pages but not charge for it and grant certain access to users?
Regards, |

that's the way Nuke Club restricts its downloads - password protecting them.
I don't know how it's done in Linux, but in windows u just don't give it Annonymous access, and make sure a user account is set up to access it. It'll prompt u for a password if u try to access the file.

Make use of the .htpasswd file. Drop it into the directories where you want to protect the files and assign unames/passwords. |

No, not .htaccess, but .htpasswd. |

Greetings,
I might be misunderstanding how this file works.
Do you not need to have htpasswd to generate the password as well as htaccess to authenticate the password.
I am a little lost is you saying I only need to put in a .htpasswd
Do you mean that I create the .htpasswd file and then tell my people to use that when they try to download the files? Does it create a popup for them to key in the password...
Sorry if this sounds dumb but I am pretty new to all of this... |

htpssswd controls the unames and passwords. htaccess controls the actual permissions on the directories (overriding other settings except for those in htpasswd).

This is driving me nuts... I thought I had the downloads figured out... now I have uploaded to the downloads folder that I created on my site, created a few sub folders and then placed a test doc in the one of them and it is giving me a 404 error... file not found... I can see it there but when I do a properties on the file in the downloads section it looks really different... Not what it should... What am I doing wrong?
the site is:
http://www.uhws.net
If I can not get the downloads there then putting password protection on some of them is a mute point...

Thanks been to the site... Looks good... I will work on that once I figure out what the heck I am doing wrong with getting my downloads into place.. I have followed the download setup instructions but I can not seem to get them to work properly.
I have followed the following info..
http://www.drewvogel.com/PN-i-gsg/config-downloads.html
I keep getting the following error when I click on the file to download it.
404 Error: File Not Found
I know it is there but maybe I am missing something.
I used the following for the file link.
http://www.uhws.net/downloads/staff/upgrade.rar
I created the downloads folder on the root and then added the staff folder within it... They have the proper rights assigned (I think).

I figured out the problem with my downloads...
Now for the .htpasswd I have created one and put it into the section I wish to have password protected but it does not seem two work..
This is what I did... (note this is not exactly what I typed)
in my Admin Section under Downloads I placed a .htpasswd file with the following text in it ( Staff:,/glb6voksjU ) When I enter the section and try to download anything it lets me...
Am I missing something? |

Did you follow the guideline for creating the appropriate settings? |

Greetings...
I think I have followed it properly...
I put the access file in the folder I wish to protect and I put the password file in another...
But, now I get internal server errors when I try to access the file instead of a popup asking for the password.
I removed the access and password files and I can download perfectly..
Question for you all.. Is there a way to create groups and then grant them permissions to the file folders or download sections?
Regards, |
