I have an very old forum version 2.0.8 and I have noticed that spam bots can register as member through phpbb without using the activating e-mail - the account is active directly. This type of spamming I have completely stopped by using Advanced Textual Confirmation installed in profile.php.

I appreciate that info. The log in box at the bottom has been gone for a long time, what I'm looking to remove is the "Log In" option in the top menu of the forums page, where it appears along with "Forum FAQ", "Search", "User Groups", etc.
Any idea how to get rid of it in the header section of the forums?

Figured it out. In modules/Forums/templates/subSilver/, in overall_header.tpl, around line 246, I removed the reference to
