How to....Simple redirect, but site still available?

I have a nuke site up and running, all works fine.

I need to make the site unavailable to the general public for a few days, while keeping it available to a small number of people.

Would this be as simple as redirecting requests for the url to a "sorry, temporarily unavailable" page, and the site still being available by browsing to url/index.php? Or, will requests for url/index.php be redirected as well?

Any suggestions on a better way to do this?

I guess you could keep index.php up and redirect all other URLs. But I don't see how that would restrict people. You may need to do some Apache .htaccess rules with IP checks
