I'm running 76v3.1 and the site seems pretty slow to me... definitely a ton slower than www.78.64bit.us which is 7.8 and lightning fast.
I deleted useless folders and files and also unused DB tables and still not that fast. I'm running gzipped too because of the upgrade to 3.1.
What is Platinum, CPG and Coppermine? Should I be switching from corephpnuke 76v3.1 to somehting else? I hear a lot about them. What's the best way to get good speed increases (besides getting a better host)?

Use uncomplicated themes.
Refrain from flash banners or even any flash images on your site.
Platinum etc are simply forks of PHP-Nuke, where people have modified them for different uses.
I would always stick with plain nuke.
The support is far far better then any of the other CMS's.
Im not saying they arent good, but for the beginner then you cant beat it (IMO).
Other than that im afraid the host is usually to blame.
ok, then i can live with that, 64bitguy's 7.8 after-patched site is blazing though, real nice, check it out www.78.64bit.us

While there are many code optimizations you can do, I've seen most of the speed is related to the server itself. A dedicated server with a local SQL server will be much faster than a shared server with an offsite database.
Platinum is a package that adds other features to phpNuke.
CPGNuke is a fork of phpNuke that adds other features, including Coppermine (an image gallery).
