Has anyone set .staccess up properly yet?

I have the .htaccess part (simple Linux), but the .staccess is not working at all. No matter how I set up Sentinel, it won't write to .staccess ( CHMOD 644, 655, 777). If I go in manually, and enter username:password to the .staccess it still will not work. Any help would be much appreciated.

The links down I need to set mine up and I dont know how. Any other sites about the .htaccess .staccess setup?.
