Has anyone ever thought about developing a Guest Map type module? I noticed someone was using a guest map service from Bravenet.com that was really pretty cool (if you havent seen it, it allows you to pinpoint your place on a map of the world and type in a little message including URL and Email...your message pops up on the map when someone hovers over the pin.

I am sure it could be done in PHP, I just don't have the knowhow to do this...I thought if someone else could take the idea and run with it, it might be a great addition. We have so many php communities spread out over the world, this would be a fun one to deploy...

Anyway, it was just a thought...the Bravenet service is free but you get popups (you could pay $9.99 a month to get the service without popups, but that is crazy!!!)

Thanks,

BoneDaddy

I think this can be done. I like this idea of a graphical guestbook of sorts.

Four suggestions for whoever wants to implement it.

1) Find the IP-address module and build upon it.

2) Allow the user to type in their address and have it lookup the proper coordinates for you... (can't remember if theirs a server online that can do this for you)

3) create admin-definable categories that are different colors and show different levels of detail.
for example: I run a website for high-school technical theater students, www.controlbooth.com, and I would like to be able to have them type in their address but to the other users it only show the town they live in.
But I would like them be able it to show the full address of the theater they work at.

4) For the full address locations, have a dynamic link to mapquest.

I like this idea a lot.. I will try to find a programmer to code this. I want to see this thru to completion.
Any programmers want to work on this one??

This guy did a nice one, but it looks like a port from phpbb that I doubt will easily install onto nuke phpbb

http://forum2.edemail.de/modules.php?name=Forums&file=map

If anyone knows how to get in contact with this guy - I think it's cloneman from ported mods, but I may be wrong.

I'd very much like to find something like this for phpnuke.

What about something like the map locator on gamespy? If anybody has seen it? It takes your zipcode givein in your profile and the other zipcodes to give you a map of the globe with pinpoints where everyone else is in the world. Something like this could be done. Either have the server take the IP and backtrack it and save it in a database and pinpoint it. Or add a zipcode value to the member profile, and when they come online display the pinpoint on the global map. The server would want to do the work and save it in a database. Then just activate or hide the pinpoint respectively.
