Banners or Advertising module, depending on which version of phpNuke you are using

I am running 4.7 which means it's called banners

Rather old eh? I don't know how it works in a version that old, but all the recent versions prompt for an link. image, etc. No code is necessary

i know that, i just need to know where in the template i am meant to put the

ads (1) code and is that right,

because i want to have ads at the top and bottem and i know i have to number them 1 and 2 and then ad them in the admin panel. but i don't know what file to put them in and where

Your theme file - theme.php
There is usually a header and footer function that would control where things are placed

For phpNuke 7.8 and higher, yes. I don't know what it would be for your version
