People can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe its the .htaccess that causes slowdown, with googletap I believe the slowdown and resource problems exist in the header.php arrays. That is alot of statements to be running a preg_replace on at every page run (Especially fully tricked out modules and a site with traffic like nukecops). I have quite a few entries in my .htaccess, probably over 100 and I have not noticed any slowdown, when I had those two big ol arrays in my header.php, my site was alot slower loading than it is now with using the other GT.
Don't really know the answer to your question, sorry!
