Re: Changes in Europe, very important, please read (Score: 1) by MikeMiles on Saturday, August 30 @ 18:13:42 CEST (User Info | Send a Message) | I haven't been following this issue over in Europe but my guess is the commercial sector was the one lobbying for this. They care about protecting their intellectual rights and preventing others from stealing them.
Let's face it, in the open source community, there's a lot of people who wrongly steal things like scraping or framing others sites in theirs without permission, taking other people's graphics, etc. If it's seen on the net, some think it's there for the taking and can be freely copied. Afterall isn't everything free?
Some companies put a lot of money into R&D and want to protect that investment when they come up with something which is what a patent does. Will it put a big dent in the open source? Maybe...maybe not. There's a ton of OS that won't be touched by patents. Just because someone applies doesn't mean he automatically gets one. If other countries don't follow suit, those things which do fall under a patent will be very tough to enforce outside of the EU. |

We will tell them to drop dead....like when we told them to drop dead when they declared that in Europe we are completly metric and have 1000 bytes to the kilobyte, not 1024. No shit.
