ie New modules Should be which modules
To produce a good product (any) hast to have what the customer needs not what they dont need.
I read cynical comments and rivalery between coders..I dont take sides...
From an outsiders piont of view a release needs the chatsev patches...for newbies and those with modules this is a pain in the butt.
Looking at nuke sites of all sorts, things like approve membership, attach mod, Sentinal, galleries, GT rewrite,br in news, better robots.txt, dynamic meta tags.
When installing it should have opitions to run only those modules that the users wish, and put stuff like encicloprea on the option to install list.
The question of more themes...themes only fill out the install, and its only 'pot luck' if the end user likes what is there...excesive bloat...one can use default deep blue (and pre match in the forum) then with a readme and notes in nuke files as to how to change background colours for a pic...better still, use pics that already are in css, the user just changes them.
One just has to go thru forums here, ravens, karakas see what ppl ask for, have problems with.
If an attutude by coders was taken more from the customers needs than fancy code, a realy great release would be made. Coders , with all due respect make great coders, but bloody useless marketers, and good marketers make even worse coders.
If u produce something from the results of this faulty survey, v.8 will be no better than any of the last 3 or 4 releases. |

Regarding our opinion, we feel we must explain.
There are a lot of things in nuke which need to be rewriten, they just don't follow basic rules for modern situation. Part of things are comes from older versions, and since php-nuke latest version already incompatible with new versions in most part we don't see the sense to keep it inside the code.
Security...
Latest patches, and basically patches at all, they comes from big code. Big code - long time not reviewed - big problems.
And more other, 3rd party bad code. Remember guys, there are no serious security holes in php-nuke latest version itself. PHPBB security holes crashed a lot of sites on php-nuke, but why hell all talking that this is php-nuke holes? Even best CMS would never be able to close all possible security holes in 3rd party modules.
So that do we have? Problems to phpnuke mostly comes from old code inside, from bad 3rd party modules, from absense of documentation for programmers.
What needed to fixt it? Easy, remove old code, make more natural born modules (to avoid 3rd party modules as much as possible), write a good documentation to have one standart.
BUT:-) Ok. We never mentioned to tell this. But, how FB earns money? Correct. With releases of new version there "bugfixes, patches". So that will happend with income if he will fix it all?:-) |

Remember you had asked us about our intentions to port phphotels or something like this?
Our answer were... porting other mod like a constant hunting. You porting... new version... porting again... new bugfix... porting again... and constant tracking for news. Too resposible. Too much time to waste.
Until FB won't start keep all the community informed about his plans, about his future, about his structure and API, it's enough hard to make something.
Le'ts image for a bit. 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.6, 7.8, 7.9 versions... all are differ. Anyone who build something for any of these can't be sure that it'll work in future versions. If to make something with core... it's even more hard. And it's impossible to keep 100% compatibility with all 7.x versions just because they are incompatible even between themselves.
We think if the Community can press FB :-) lol :-) to publish officially things which he will promiss to keep in future releases, API and etc there are will be much more reasons to participate. |

Like edogs was hinting, the true issue is whether or not FB will conform to the rest of the world or still choose to put out one or two new features every two months, and call it a new version.... that is of course not backwards compatible.
At some point someone has to say, "enough is enough". We should be asking ourselves this question.... and only then can progress be made for any kind of positive future. |

If code was properly written and patches maintained (using CVS or otherwise), then we'd see much better system. No new features until the old ones are properly patched and tested |

(Score: 1) by spottedhog on Sunday, October 02 @ 21:16:43 CEST (User Info | Send a Message) http://www.smf-nuke.com | I agree.... The issue really is if FB is ready to colloborate or if he still chooses to be a solo ride. That in itself will determine the future of phpnuke.... Why have new features when teams of coders are trying to undue past issues?
But as long as new features = new release = money to buy latest and greatest.... then the nuke community will forever be going in circles.... every 2 months.... like clockwork. New Nuke version, new patches, module creators scramble to make modifications.... And people like Evaders tries to sort it out, both with patches and here in the Forums.
When is enough is enough? |
