URGENT - This thing is really causing havoc...it sends RPC Shutdown requests to other PCs over the net.
2 people I already know have been victims of the RPC Shutdown requests. They get 50 odd seconds while their PC is shutting down.
What is annoying, is that those who are not technys may think they have a virus when they do not. They will rebuild their PC. Only to find it restarting when they connect to the internet again.
Off the top of my head...I advice those of you on XP goes into es into Administrative Tools....
Local Security Policy.
Click on Local Policies - User rights assignment
The look for "Force remote Shutdown of system"
Take out Administrators...
So even if you don't have a password on account with admin privilages....no one can ever shutdown your PC remotely using RPC ever again!
Windows 2000 users can do something similar....
Then you can get out there and get a decent firwall + virus scanner.
ZX I would put this comment on the front page though because some people mught not read this within 40-50 seconds.

Oh bugger....can someone with Windows XP Home tell me if they can see an icon called "Local Security Policy" in their "Administrative Tools" section????

EASY FIX (Score: 1)

1) click Start | Run and type msconfig
2) got to the startup tab and remove the tick next to msblast
3) restart your computer in safe mode (press F8 before windows starts up)
4) Click Start | Search and look for msblast.exe and delete it
5) restart your computer. The virus is now gone.
6) go to this site and download the bug fix for your system:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp
this will stop the virus from working
7) Use either Windows XP's Own firewall, or use Another like Zone Alarm (free), or Norton (not free), to block the port that the virus gets in from. Windows Xp's built in Firewall already does this by default, to activate it, go to Network Connections, right click on your internet connection, click on the security tab and tick the box to activate the firewall.
Thats it, you shouldnt see the thing again, it should also stop any new viruses, simlar to it from being downloaded. |

1 of the people I have been speaking to have been using the XP firewall though. Zone Alarm appears to be doing the job.

(User Info | Send a Message) | The site isn't down. One feature of the worm is it disables javascript so the site containing the fix "appears" to be down when it isn't. Starting on the 16th of this month until the end of the year, it is programmed to start sending a flood of small packets out from infected computers to hit microsoft's windowsupdate in a non-stop DoS attack.
With all the programmers they have, Microsoft should be ashamed of the hole ridden and buggy software they are constantly releasing. This gets back to why monopolies are a very bad thing. They can release pure junk and the public is at their mercy because there isn't any competition.
Protect yourself -- always run a firewall and a virus checker. Periodically, run a scumware cleaner too. Those who don't deserve to get hit because this type of garbage has been going on for a very long time. |
