Hi again..

I'm sure this is a rather dumb question - but can anyone explain to me the differences between content - topics - and sections and perhaps give me some examples of how they are using each (say on this website).

I've been playing with phpnuke almost nonstop for the last 24 hours and this one is really making me confused. Wink

Hi and welcome Maggie.

I'll try my best, although it may not be the "best". Wink

Topics, I use them here to group news articles into silos. You can see that some news articles are focused on security, others on this site, others are offtopic, while yet others are asking for help.

Sections I don't use much here, except for one article, the site's AUP. I never really had much use for that mod.

Same goes for content.

The latter two are modules that you have to actively maintain and I haven't really noticed sites that make successful use out of them. Although, it just may be that I haven't yet found a suitable function for them yet.

Perhaps if we were posting lessons on phpnuke we could use either content or sections.

Hi..

Thanks for the nice welcome and the speedy reply. Smile I think I figured out how to use topics - mainly for contributor's material. But the content/section thing seems potentially powerful if I could just figure out what it does. <LOL>

Can I ask what you mean by *actively maintain* them? I'm thinking of using content to develop such things as my online class brochures. I don't have a clue what I would use sections for.

Thanks!

I have (tried) to use Content to create pages on my site that aren't going to change, like my site's Terms of Service. This way I have large amounts of text that are integrated into the site.

It doesn't work, though! It's very buggy, and it rarely saves the Content page I create. Confused

Hi..

I just tried using content to create an online class page on my website - and it worked fairly well...though I did run into the *not saving* problem a couple of times.

Am not sure about this header/footer thing though. But here's another question - is there a way to create a content block that picks up only *one category*. That way I could just have one content block for online classes and one for other kinds of things. Wink

Hi..

You know, I just really fell into that bug on Content and it is too bad - because it is a good feature....it is just refusing to save. I'd really like to use this too. Do you know if this is a reported bug?

Thanks!

Maggie

Here is how I use the content, topics, and sections...

I have topics to categorize my news stories, so that they show up in the right category on my topics page.

For content, I use that for my information pages like contact info, privacy policy, TOS/AUP etc.

I use sections for my previous game logs.

I'm not sure if I'm utilizing these modules the way they were inteneded, but it seems to work well enough that I'm satisfied with how it is working.

There is at least one bug recorded regarding the Content and Reviews modules, basically they refuse to save content whenever a single quote is present in the content (i.e. it's mike's etc...) Sec-fix patch 3 covers a fix for this that applies to Nuke 6.5
