Now that could be a problem... I'll have to make a comment in the distro for users to add them in manually then since I'll keep them out of the default install. Crashing could be a problem.

Tar up your header.php, and .htaccess file and upload them for me. I'll check them out.

Thank you, Paul. It was my fault. A bracket has been omited in the rewrite rules.

But I found something else. The short link detailsXX.html doesn't work with characters of the upper part of the table (non-English). The link is there, but the target is missing, 404.

No way, details should be left unrewritten. Just imagine that somebody has written something in Polish or French as a title. With so many diacritics. The rewritten link will not work.

PS. There are now 115 bots on site. Half of them in the forums, the other half in the Encyclopedia. Some of them are still with sids.

Hmm... using the same nosid implementation here and at CCSP the googlebots aren't grabbing any links with &sid in it.

We'll get there !!

What will happen if we remove the sid function from the sessions.php?

1. The forum will not reconize us?
2. We'll be unable to mark forums and topics as read?
3. The whole Nuke will crash?

The sid is there for folks that don't create cookies on the hard drive. Basically all those folks will not be allowed to log in.

Good! There are two more links (from Categories) to close the articles cycle:

http://nukecops.com/modules.php?name=News&file=categories&op=newindex&catid=6
and in the Archives
http://nukecops.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&op=newindex&catid=6

The last one is presently pointing to the home page

Howdy,

First, again, great job.

Second, I'm curious why the modrewrite doesn't affect all article links, such as when they appear in the Older Articles box. Those links are the same old clunky dynamic ones.

Also, is there anything fundamentally different in the way Google will perceive those links that have been converted, from how the previous hacks such as Imago has employed and developed?

Reason being, I've switched my Google hack from an older system to the new Google Tap. And articles from my site which are normally added to the Google News service within a matter of minutes are now not showing up. Worse, or even more perplexing, a few previous stories that had been showing up in Google News still do ... but now with the crappy dynamic URL. Previsouly all of my stories in their system had the nice short ones.

http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&q=scienceblog&btnG=Search+News

Now don't get me wrong: The fact that stories with the dynamic URLs are making it in at all is a good thing. But something seems odd, and I can't quite put my finger on it.

The bottom line is I'm concerned that even though Google Tap is meant to make life easy for a Google spider, perhaps something is not quite there. And as a result, my news stories are not gettng into the Google database.

UPDATE

Google seems back to indexing my news stories, but for better or worse is taking some with the nice short URLs and others with the dynamic ones. Maybe this goes back to my initial question about URLs being rewritten throughout a site, including in Older Articles and Backend.

It can take Google from a couple days to a couple weeks to re-index a website. I wouldn't worry about that, you should be back to normal soon. It happens to all of us.

As for the old-articles.php, here is the idea.

Instead of taking a rewrite link that has only "&" in it and duplicating it to have "&" I have simply decided to have one set of links for each URL.

I don't want to build a massive array that needs to be compared for every link on every page load. So what I've done is modified the code directly in old articles block. Its a simple change from either "&" in the links to "&", or vice versa.

The next google tap will have that documented for old-articles and other mods like my_download. Hopefully I'll get it out tonight.

To see the results, cruise those sections here on site.

Ben, the same happens to my forum links. One and the same link can be taken with or without sid trail by Googlebots from DIFFERENT IPs.

I see, Paul has included new code for Nuke 6.x sessions.php

BTW, where did you get the articles pagination hack? I wonder when there be next page in the Topics and News, or there already is and I don't how to turn it on?

Old Articles are showing with the short URLs in the right situated scrolling block. The same holds true for the posts in the left block (New Symposium). But I have double rules in the header.php, as Paul said, first with
Code:
& a m p s
(without space) and a second time with only
Code:
&

Ypu may want to download my package for hints or wait for Paul to release the next version.

For anything new you see on site it will be in the next release of GT. As for double entries, that concerns me on the php engine performance which is why I try to stay away from double entries.

Oh, check this out Imago...

Computer Cops ranks higher than InfoWorld and is second to CNN. Wink

Hmm, on inspection of my upper post,

I meant from "&" to "&" + "amp;" or vice versa.
