From todays article.
I added the missing user agents to my htaccess list below. Using the mod_rewrite rules. There may be some duplication or ones that you use ie front page, getright ect... but this might save someone else a few minutes. And maybe someone with the time or skills can weed the list. Turnitinbot/1.5 was getting by just turnitinbot so I tried the actual referer and left out the older versions. I didn't test each agent since I'm a little lazy  Any suggestions or comments are welcomed.
This should send forbidden message. Of course this will only work if the bots comply with that. If some of these comply with the robots.txt let us saves processing if they behave 
Of course this will need some tuning thats why I posted it.

As of right now anyone matching that specific list of agents is forwarded to a special page that randomly generates bogus 500,000 emails.
In addition, any who sends a blank user-agent gets sent to a 403 permission denied page advising them they can't access the site until they send a user-agent. |

Wow! I'm impressed with the list, now need to know how to implement this on my webhosted server, where I don't have root access and my .htaccess files disappear from my view. |

Pretty much plaguerized from webmasterworld forums
For the disappearing .htaccess in most ftp clients you can open your site and click the download link without highlighting a file then a box will popup to type the filename your requesting into. This works great for everything except chmod |

in your ftp client make it list with a -al first.
it will show .[dot] files then |

I'm such a serverside newbie. I plan on changing that some day. <see future "liberate yourself - build phpnuke server thread"> But for now I rely on my webhost far too much.
Thanks for the clues. I had another look around my cuteftp but didn't find the way to list all files.
I did manage to manual get... one of the .htaccess files to my local machine. I believe the existence of these files is preventing me from deleting old module directories. modules/someoldmod/lang/.httaccess It read:
deny from all
btw, this sort of file isn't in all module /lang dirs in phpnuke. What exactly does its existence in a /lang dir mean?
Further to clueing in, I found this link: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_access.html I now have a better clue as to those mysterious .htaccess files and what power they have.

.htaccess is a directory level access control file used by Apache to determine what kind of "access" users have. The .htaccess in your lang folder is read only when accessing that folder or sub-folders. If you have "deny from all" in it, that means no one can access those files directly. |

Was wondering if a normal .htaccess file (with out the mod_rewrite modifications) would need the OR string? I've never actually done much with this type of file so i guess i'm a newbie to them. |

So if I was to implement this htaccess bad bot method I just put it in my phpnuke root dir? And, I update the list by searching through my log files? |

wow! This stuff is complex! But thanks for the enlightenment. It helped a little to read http://httpd.apache.org/docs/misc/rewriteguide.html which gives real life examples of this voodoo. <g>
One more question... how does using the bad bot method affect overhead? The site that really needs this already seems slower than mollasses, (no java either). |

Is it slow because there is too much bandwidth being hogged? Or via the page generation is the server loading them up slow? |
