the theme that i'm using doesn't have the little picture that indicates the section of the news post.
now, i want to make it look 'real spiffy... how would i go about adding the section picture back in?

I would need to see the code for you theme.php and the story_page.html file for your theme . You may not have the story_page.html file depending on your theme.
