Hi all

Not certain that this belongs anywhere so in the "Off-Topic" section it goes.

Our site is currently experiencing issues with its host -- hostcolor-- (lots of down-time, excuses instead of results and best yet being told that the new servers don't handle PHP-Nuke so we are left on the jam-packed old ones).

What I am looking for is suggestions on other hosts to look into. We are just a social site, needing simple hosting. Currently we are spending $72 a year for 5000 mb space, 50GB month bandwith, more mail than we need, and a domain registration (I believe).

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

There are a lot of shared hosting sites. I would try the big names like 1and1, GoDaddy, etc.

I personally don't use them, I run my own dedicated server. Worth the cost if you have the traffic Smile

Probably, depending on your first priority, your hosting decision should be made. One of my alerts is "not to be cheated" by many shared hosting advertises.

This is some of crucial info.
To run phpnuke for your portal, you need faster db connection because phpnuke heavily depends on sql server.
Therefore, before selecting your web-hosting, double check the followings:

1. localhost style DB supports?
2. SSH supports?
3. what is the cap of traffic?
4. what is the max # of inodes which means the max # of files?

For this I am making a review modules in some of dev. memebers site (in my site).
There are tons of fake and cheating whebhosting companies.
For instance, lunapage does not support more than 50000 files. 50,000 files are too small. One of famous shared webhosting is FatCow. this company is trying to reduce their internal money. This means that they dont support cPanel which they should pay licence money. Arvixe is a really stupid company which I tested. Their localhost and unlimited files are OK. But, when I tested my phpnuke enterprise (this is what we are developing) for testing purposes, they kicked me out without any notice. Why? I took 250GB space for my phpnuke test (it includes fully embedded gallery2 and newly weaved phpBB3 - in our cirtical development and Google Packages).

HostGator is more generous. I uploaded 300 gb backup in a condition of 10mbps unmetered band. Their server is so great. However, VERY RECENTLY they began to limit the number of files up to 250,000.

Ok. I have tons of probes to test web hosting companies because enterprise version of phpnuke should be fit in such webhosting companies.

Once again, DO NOT be a fool while hearing "UNLIMITED space and UNLIMITED band." They are all fake and cheaters as long as they are all shared hosting.

Try to calculate the followings.

condition:
1. Your have 50000 files and each files are DSLR photos such as 4000 x 3000 pixel JPG = 2.5 to 3 MBs. 3 x 50,000 = 150GB. 150G!!! This is stupid.

2. Max band cap is 10mbps, which means max traffice cap cannot exceed 10mbps (around 1 Mega file per second). 10mbps x 24 x 3600 sec (1day) x 30 days = 1 month. --> around 2.5T band.

Therefore, I would like you to find hosting companies to meet the critical (above) three conditions even if you will pay more.

Good Luck.

P.S. by the way, for php-nuke persons, we need phpnuke web-hosting reviews as well (in terms of professional eyes).
