I have my signup at my site with email activation included but I am still suffering from people or bots signing up with links to pharmacy links and other crap. I am looking for a login that uses the email link sign up and the number/letter activation. Or is there anything else I can do? thanks

If there is a common denomenator in the email addresses they use to signup you could always add that domain to the banlist.

Enable the Sign in with Numbers in the config file.
so ppl have to sign in with:
- Username
- Password
- Random serie of given numbers

It is not a perfect solution,
but it does the trick.

That will work if they are bots but not if they are humans.

Check out the approve membership module, I havent played with it for a while but it may have a gfx_chk option for signup.

You can find it explained in the beginning of the config.php file at least in 7.2:

$gfx_chk: Set the graphic security code on every login screen,
# You need to have GD extension installed:
# 0: No check
# 1: Administrators login only
# 2: Users login only
# 3: New users registration only
# 4: Both, users login and new users registration only
# 5: Administrators and users login only
# 6: Administrators and new users registration only
# 7: Everywhere on all login options (Admins and Users)
# NOTE: If you aren't sure set this value to 0

*sigh*

I too have the problem of spam-users registering at my site. Yesterday I installed the membership approval module but today, I had to erase 2 new "users" who were advertising their big brothers porn video collection in my forums. There is no record of them passing the approve membership module, and I have the GFX check enabled at setting 6 in config.php. so I can only assume that they use some form of SQL-blah to force their way in (I said assume, cause I'm in fact a total newb when it comes to the DB side of php-nuke)
Is it feasible to alter the name of the nuke_users table? IE: Isn't there a gazillion of references in the php code that need to be adapted if you do that? and last but not least: Is there a chance this will stop these lame %#§{}@&| s.o.bs?

Hmmm. In the meantime I checked my server logs and found out that they are creating their user name and access trough the phpbb forum-registration. Of course this was set to the default setting (no account activation) so I set it to Activation by admin. The problem now is: when someone registers trough the forum their account still shows up in the memberslist, but they are prevented from seeing the forum/posting in it. So: Not good enough.

Is there anything that can be done to stop people from registering trough the phpbb module?

**edit: I just renamed the profile.php in modules/Forums and that seems to do the trick. Users still can register trough the PHP-Nuke front and post in the forums. When someone tries to be sneaky and to register trough phpbb they will get the message "Sorry, that module file was not found." Granted: this solution is as subtle as the Ardennes offensive, but hey, it's working. Very Happy
