In the grand scheme of things, PHPNuke is FB. His baby..... his thing to do as he may wish. So in that regard, it is irrelevant what anyone may feel because FB has failed to listen to major security problems, so what makes one think he would care about something like this?
Now if you are talking hypothetically, it is a no-brainer. Code is just safer when it is written specifically for one software application and not being all inclusive. Then there is the support issue, since FB does not provide support for his own work.
Personally, I think using on MySQL and PHP makes very good sense since a vast majority of available hosting firms use those platforms. Also, looking more at the security angle, being able to use the PHP 5 and MySQL 4+ would lean towards fully secure coding by using classes and bound parameters.
There are so many issues with the core/original Nuke code, that is does appear hard to know where to even begin. I would think converting to known standards such as W3C and also demanding themes be CSS error and warning free would also need to go with any future changes.
OK.... I will say this again..... Until the powers that be draw a line in the sand stating that from here on out, any module, block, or theme posted for download must comply with known and displayed standards, then there is not going to any need to think about only what database program to support.
...still on the soapbox.... ;-) Before a block, module, or theme is listed in the news, they should confom to known and established standards or not be made available to the public. I know, simple words, tough implementation.
Well, I could rant on and on.... but I will shut up and sit down now.
I vote to go solely on the world leader and partner of PHP, MySQL. |

There are other database engines available which are equally as capable as mysql, restricting phpNuke to mysql restricts the available user base.
Many of the increasing numbers of open source databases have growing followings, excluding them from the phpNuke community would IMHO be short sighted. |
