Add them to the allowable HTML or remove the html checking altogether, though it kind of 'defeats the purpose' for having it...

Other than 'it's a mac', my guess would be that its browser related - have you tried an ie browser for the mac (gasp, shock - the horror, oh the humanity)...

Check the index.php under the admin directory of the file you are working on - usually its either there or in one of the includes.
You should see a switch($op) statement somewhere...

If the existing avatars were moved and/or overwritten by the upgrade, you could be in for some fun.
Check the actual link to see if the files were existing in the expected location?
